About the Azores

The Azores are an archipelago of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,500 km from Lisbon and about 3,900 km from the east coast of North America. The Azores is one of the last untouched areas of natural beauty on the planet, unaffected for the most part by mass tourism.

The nine beautiful Azorean Islands have volcanic origins; the mountain of Pico, on Pico Island, is the highest in Portugal. The Azores are in fact the peaks of some of the highest mountains in the world showing through the sea.

The Archipelago of the Azores is situated in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean about 1500 km from the European coast and 3900 km from the North American coast. The resident population of the nine islands totals 237,000 people. Ferries and domestic flights link the islands.

Major airports of the Azores

Driving Conditions of the Azores

The major concern for visitors to the Azores compared to the USA and other areas of the Western World is incurred through the driving conditions. Streets are often poorly lit and deserted at night. The general advice for travellers to the Azores is to wear seatbelts and avoid night driving. Drive defensively.

Weather of the Azores

The climate in the Azores is temperate. Weather can be unpredictable and changeable. The islands have plenty of rain and the weather is generally warm and mild. Humidity often reaches 80%, temperatures rarely go above 80°F (27°C). The weather is most pleasant during the summer season (June to September). Winter can be chilly with high winds.

Medical Requirements/Medical Care
Adequate medical care is available throughout the Azores. No special vaccinations are normally needed but check for any changes before departure.
